Reformed Government Reform

WOW.

Greece’s Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis released the proposed “first comprehensive list of reform measures [the Greek Government] is envisaging”. This list has been submitted to the EUROGROUP for assessment and further processing.

GREEK GVT REFORM AGENDA-INTRO.24.02.15.pdf

It is well structured although it is more of a policy manifesto than a “technical” document for financial ministers (the EUROGROUP members) to financially assess.  Before approved as final, this document needs to be reviewed by the EU, IMF and the ECB (formerly known as TROIKA, currently referred to as “the Institutions” as well as the 19 Eurozone Governments.

The reform list very much resembles a short Memorandum of Understanding (MoU or MNIMONIO in Greek) which was a “taboo” term for both parties (SYRIZA, INDEPENDENT GREEKS) forming the current Greek Government.

The entire 7-page document may be found here: GREEK GVT REFORM AGENDA (64K PDF File).

The EU Commission’s swift response was positive:

Letter by Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis and Commissioner Pierre Moscovici to the President of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, on the Greek government’s reform proposals:

In the view of the Commission, this list is sufficiently comprehensive to be a valid starting point for a successful conclusion of the review as called for by the Eurogroup at its last meeting.

The EUROGROUP followed suit and also approved it shortly after.

Eurogroup statement on Greece:

The institutions provided us with their first view that they consider this list of measures to be sufficiently comprehensive to be a valid starting point for a successful conclusion of the review.

As our readers know, this blog is dedicated to identifying major changes of policies and promises made be politicians in Greece with no prejudice and without examining if these changes (KOLOTOUMBAs) are for better or for worse. Our main objections are for political parties obtaining the electorate preference by blatantly lying to citizens.

The following is a very interesting tweet by Alexis Tsipras that includes a truth and a lie which both are de-facto KOLOTOUMBAs:

tsipras-tweet.13.01.15

Alexis Tsipras on 13 January 2015: “We are not like Mr. Samaras who promised in 2012 re-negotiations and disengagements and did a (kolo)toumba on the very same evening of the elections”.

Kolotoumba 1: Indeed, former PM Antonis Samaras had promised a re-negotiation with the TROIKA which was reduced to a continuation of austerity reforms as per the MNIMONIO.

Kolotoumba 2: Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras apparently is doing the exact same thing.

About Kolotoumba No 2, Tsipras did not promise the renegotiation of the FAFA (in Greek, Mnimonio). He promised its total anullment on the first day of his government by way of a a Law of just one article. His, is not just a Kolotoumba, it is a ballet manoevre that even Nourejev would have envied. We are off course very happy with it but we would have wished to have avoided 2 months of Economic inaction and disctraction that led the country to the same position (99.9%) as the one of the previous government, however, in a much weaker state.
